In 2004, after consultations with some 2,000 maple syrup producers across Quebec and a unanimous vote by the delegates at the FPAQ annual general assembly, the Policy with respect to production and marketing quotas came into effect.
Objectives of production quotas
The main objective of the quota policy is to adjust the supply of maple syrup in response to consumer demand. It also has three specific objectives:
- Stabilize selling prices for producers and, ultimately, the buying price for consumers
- Foster investments in the maple industry
- Maintain a steady number of maple businesses in operation, regardless of their size
Maple quota = annual production volume allocated to each maple syrup business
