7 Million More Taps Coming to Québec Maple Trees
And Over 1,200 New Maple Enterprises Going Into Business
Québec Maple Syrup Producers (QMSP) announced in June that it would issue 7 million new taps for start-up and expansion projects this year. Today, the organization continued this exciting process with draws and allocations of the taps. As a result, the total number in production will rise to almost 57 million taps in the province’s maple forests within three years.
“We are very pleased to welcome some 1,300 new businesses to our family,” said QMSP President Serge Beaulieu. “They will contribute to the economic health of our province and its 12 maple-producing regions, while helping meet the ever-growing demand for maple syrup, both here at home and in more than 60 other countries.”
Nearly 4,000 Applications
QMSP issued the new taps on the recommendation of the organization’s Board of Directors and the September 2 decision by the Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec (RMAAQ) to change the regulations governing quotas. Applications were then opened and accepted until October 15. In that short period, QMSP received a total of 3,934 applications—1,736 for start-up enterprises (of which 1,445 were deemed eligible) and 2,198 (1,818 eligible) for expansions of existing operations.
Applicants could choose whether they wanted taps allocated by tranche distribution or by lottery, and the 7 million were distributed in proportion to those choices in the applications received, as shown on the following diagram. Also, the regulations stipulated that 5% of the new taps were to be set aside for start-up operations on public lands. 37 producers had obtained the appropriate authorizations from the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec (MFFP) and were given the green light to begin management of 355,234 taps in total. All applicants are receiving personalized responses in the next few days to inform them of their results.
