Act respecting the marketing of agricultural, food and fish products

Under this legislation, first adopted in 1956 and repeatedly updated since, maple syrup producers gradually organized to collectively market their product.

The act created two tools that are crucial to the collective marketing of agricultural products: the joint plan and Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec, the province’s agricultural marketing board.

Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec

Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec (RMAAQ) is the government body responsible for applying the Farm Products Marketing Act, under which it was created.

The agricultural marketing board has two core mandates:

  1. Act as an administrative tribunal
  2. Act as an economic regulatory body

It has three main functions to allow it to carry out its mandate:

  1. Foster the efficient and orderly marketing of agricultural and food products.
  2. Ensure the development of harmonious relations between industry players.
  3. Settle problems arising in the production and marketing of agricultural products, taking into account and protecting the interests of consumers and the public.
