Research is at the heart of the PPAQ strategy

Innovation is a core value for maple syrup producers. The Québec Maple Syrup Producers (PPAQ) has applied that value through scientific research to improve the industry’s understanding of maple, leveraging new knowledge to develop markets and help the maple industry grow in Quebec and Canada.

Research objectives

The goal of the PPAQ and the Canadian maple industry is to spur the economic growth of the maple industry by boosting productivity and competitiveness and ensuring the industry’s long-term viability at the national and international levels.

Over 7 million dollars invested in research

Since 2005, the Québec Maple Syrup Producers has carried out more than 50 research projects to the tune of over $7 million in investments. These projects have provided a better understanding of our “blond gold.”

What did we discover?

  • Its antioxidant power
  • Its nutritional value
  • Its unique phenolic compound named “Quebecol”
  • Its potential as a better sweetener for controlling blood sugar
  • Its abscisic acid content
  • Its benefits for athletes
  • Ways to develop and market maple water

From a tasty treat to a healthy choice

We’ve learned some surprising things about the composition, properties, and potential health benefits of maple syrup—and new discoveries keep coming. From its humble beginnings as a sweet pancake topping, maple syrup is increasingly being recognized for its natural, nutritional, and functional qualities. Research results suggest that maple syrup could eventually be recommended as a replacement for white sugar for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

World-class research

The PPAQ has developed an international network of reputed scientists dedicated to learning more about maple in order to support its efforts to promote maple products around the world. Many of its research projects have been recognized by the international scientific community in fields as varied as nutrigenomics, physiology, organic chemistry, and life cycle assessment.

Government financial support

These projects are made possible with the involvement of the Canadian Maple Industry Advisory Committee and the financial support of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and Quebec’s Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation (MAPAQ). The PPAQ received 65% if its research funds from these two levels of government through agricultural research and innovation grant programs.

The future of maple: Horizon 2020

Canada’s maple industry seeks to establish maple products as value-added products by developing multiple applications for the food and non-food sectors. This is the vision behind the New Generation of Maple 2020 development strategy, which looks to new and innovative maple products to develop markets for Canada’s maple industry in the coming years. The goal is to secure a strong position for maple products in the agrifood economy and as a value added ingredient in the 21st century.
